RT Group, Inc. was retained by Daniel O’Connell’s Sons, Inc. (DOC) to prepare a Crane Placement Plan Submittal for the installation of large girders as part of the Main Stage Theater Renovation Project for Salem State University.
The project was very challenging due to the presence of existing shallow underground utilities in the proposed area of the crane and limited space requiring very close proximity of the crane to existing underground structures.
As part of the project, RTG performed detailed lifting analyses which included determining the picking weights for each lift, selecting a crane of adequate capacity, checking girder stresses during lifting operations, estimating the maximum crane outrigger reactions, determining the required crane mats for the outriggers, and performing soil bearing analyses. In addition, RTG designed temporary timber and steel shoring for an adjacent foundation and performed a detailed analysis of the existing critical underground utilities located below the crane.
