RT Group, Inc. (RTG) was retained by the Town of Chaplin to provide design, permitting, bidding, and construction phase services for repairs and improvements to the Darling Pond Dam at the Edward Garrison Park. Funding for this project was provided through a Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) Grant. DSCF1873The Dam is an earth embankment dam that had previously utilized an existing concrete drop inlet water control structure as its only discharge outlet. Due to its inadequate size and clogging from a local beaver colony, the dam was overtopped in the past and had the potential for breaching. In order to mitigate the above issues, RTG designed improvements to the dam which included raising the crest to a uniform elevation, armoring the upstream slope with riprap, flattening the  downstream slope and installing a downstream blanket drain, installing a new precast concrete box culvert spillway and downstream riprap swale, and retrofitting the existing drop inlet structure to serve as a low-level outlet. Other services provided as part of this project included performing a wetlands delineation survey, performing a topographic survey, performing a dam inspection, performing  H&H analyses, preparing the CTDEEP and USACE permit applications, providing bidding assistance, and providing construction phase services.
