RT Group, Inc. (RTG) was retained by Specialty Diving Services, Inc. (SDS) of North Kingstown, Rhode Island to design the excavation support system for a soil remediation project located on Gould Island. The remediation project was undertaken to remove a mass of PCB contaminated soil located immediately adjacent to Narragansett Bay. The excavation support system allowed the contaminated soil to be removed in dewatered conditions, thus facilitating access for remediation personnel to enter the excavation to collect soil samples.

US Navy Gould Island Temporary Earth Support System 3Based on shallow depths to bedrock, an internally braced “no toe” sheet pile wall design was utilized to support the excavation. In conjunction with this design, RTG designed the dewatering and solids removal systems, and provided periodic inspection services during construction.

Furthermore, RTG worked closely with SDS to utilize their available sheeting and building materials. This resulted in a very economical wall design, allowing SDS to complete the project under budget.US Navy Gould Island Temporary Earth Support System 4
