RT Group, Inc. (RTG) was retained by Sprint/Nextel Systems Corp. (Sprint) to design approximately 1,500-linear-feet of horizontal directionally drilled (HDD) High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) conduit to house fiber optic cable beneath the Seekonk River between Providence and East Providence, RI.
To facilitate the design of the conduit, RTG completed several field investigations to characterize the subsurface conditions along the proposed HDD alignment. The field investigations included, but were not limited to performing a topographic survey; a subsurface investigation, including soil borings and test pits; and coordinating a bathymetric survey and landside/waterside geophysical surveys.
RTG compiled and reduced this data to create the project baseplan and plan set in AutoCAD, and to aid Sprint with negotiating easements from multiple property owners on whose properties the project was located.
Throughout the design phase, RTG was responsible for coordinating the project with several local and state entities, including the Cities of Providence and East Providence; the Narragansett Bay Commission; the State of Rhode Island Building Commission and Department of Transportation; private property owners; and affected utility owners. In addition, RTG was tasked with preparing the RICRMC Permit Application for the work.
As a part of this project, RTG was retained by Sprint to provide Construction Phase Services, including but not limited to reviewing Contractor submittals, providing construction observation, and preparing the project Record Drawings.
