RT Group, Inc. (RTG) was retained by Southern New England Ship Building Company (SENESCO MARINE) to provide Professional Engineering Services for the evaluation and design of modifications to their existing steel roof trusses to support four (4) new 20-Ton bridge cranes utilized in the assembly of steel fuel barges.
The original building was built in the early 1940’s as part of the Quonset Air Base. The 160-foot-long trusses did not support any cranes as part of the original design. Modifications were made to the trusses in the 1970’s to accommodate smaller bridge cranes, but these modifications were not adequate to support the larger cranes required by SENESCO.
RTG was tasked to obtain as-built field measurements and complete the structural design necessary to implement the required modifications. RTG prepared Plans and Specifications to allow SENESCO to self-perform the work. RTG also provided weld inspection services at the completion of the project and prior to the installation of the new cranes.
