RT Group, Inc. (RTG) was retained by the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) to design and obtain permits for the construction of approximately 1,300 linear feet of new steel sheet pile bulkhead.
The existing anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead was constructed in the mid-1940’s by the U.S. Navy as a part of the Quonset Naval Air Station. Several sections of the 70-year-old bulkhead have deteriorated significantly and have even failed in some locations.
Accordingly, RTG was tasked with completing the design and permitting of a new steel sheet pile bulkhead and anchor wall system, to be installed directly in front of the existing one. Design elements included the steel sheet piles; the tie-back system; a bulkhead repair section; a timber fender system; mooring cleats; steel and concrete cap alternatives; and the permanent abandonment of several existing utilities.
